The New York State Campaign for Mental Health Housing is a broad-based public education and advocacy campaign with four related objectives:
Housing Preservation & Reform
The preservation of approximately 30,000 units of housing currently available to people with mental illness in New York State – including supportive and licensed housing – by reforming oversight functions, investing in rehabilitation of the housing stock, and ensuring adequate funding for services and operations.
Housing Development
The development of approximately 35,000 new units of various models of mental health housing in New York State over the next ten years, including the implementation of the Third New York/New York Agreement.
Tracking & Analyses
The establishment of a statewide mental health housing waiting list, identifying unmet needs, by type and location, throughout New York State.
Planning
The creation of a comprehensive mental health housing plan for adults and children. Developed in collaboration with stakeholders and local communities, the plan should include: a realistic assessment of the numbers of units needed; the design of state-of-the-art housing models; reform of existing models where needed, with an assessment of the best use of existing properties; credible financing strategies for capital, operating, and service costs; and explicit milestones for implementation. |
